The Last Supper Catering Company is the heartwarming story of B. Thankful Childe-Lucknow. Turned out with red corkscrew hair, one eye brown, the other green, and gifted with the power to hear the voices of the departed, B. Thankful is cast aside by the town, and lives an isolated upbringing in the woods with Big G, Little G, and Tyler Lucknow.

Tragedy, followed by the discovery of a long-forgotten paint-by-number picture of the Last Supper, thrusts B. Thankful from the safety of everything she has ever known.

Beyond the boundary of her sheltered life, B. Thankful discovers the world's hard edges as well as its beauty.  More importantly, with the help of a cast of quirky and tenderhearted souls (both earthly and heavenly), she discovers why God made her special.

In her debut novel the author invites you on a journey with B.Thankful, a young, naive but life-wise girl who is on a mission. The author takes the reader on a ride through just about every emotion possible. Narrated by B.Thankful, you find yourself experiencing B.Thankful's pain, her joy, her longings. The author's style is amazing - it is a comfortable style that draws you in and then doesn't let you go. I was transported into areas of emotion that I have rarely experienced with current authors. I cried as Bobbie Lee passed but then laughed out loud as B.Thankful relates, as only B.Thankful can, the lyrics of the song his mates sing for him. The multiple layers of this novel are incredible and hard to describe in words. All I can say is that I highly recommend this book to those who wish to do more than just "read". If you want to "experience" a depth and range of emotions this book will not disappoint. Bravo to the author! And I can't wait for the next installment of B.Thankful!

The Last Supper Catering Company Michaelene McElroy 9780985359324 Books Reviews

For those who have lost a loved one, and need some reassurance that all will be ok, this book is for you. This charming little story follows a girl by the name of 'B.Thankful', who has the ability to communicate with those who have left the physical world. She has been given this gift so she can give comfort to those who are about to die, and cook them their last meal. Full of wonderful little 'life-isms', it had me reading some paragraphs and sentences twice, just to take it in. My only criticism is that she has several dreams where she meets Jesus and the dreams tend to go on for pages - this become a little too repetitive and perhaps too religious for me, but that's a personal sentiment - others may not feel the same. A heart-warming book that will put a smile on your face.
From the very first page Michaelene McElroy's prose left me breathless, dumbfounded. I have read very few books that made me feel the delight of a child. Her adjectivally splendid sentences landed and melted on my heart as softly as snowflakes. I found myself re-reading sentences over again to marvel and savor them like one of B. Thankful Childlucknow's beignets. It may sound odd, but while reading THE LAST SUPPER CATERING COMPANY I was struck my Ms. McElroy's chancy and vibrant phrasings that could have so easily become so much sentimentalism, but in the hands of a true artist Michaelene McElroy, knows exactly how to bridle her brushstrokes to create a true work of art, an honest to goodness adult fairy tale, and as an adult I read it with almost child-like wonderment. I have read few books as endearing as THE LAST SUPPER CATERING COMPANY. While reading her delicious poetry that poses as prose the term "Art Nouveau" kept echoing in my mind. Whereas many writers use a rectilinear approach to writing, an almost "Art Deco"--straight-and-down style, which can be refreshing in it's sheer simplicity, Michaelene's approach, much like a Mucha, lifts your imagination up in swirls and curlicues of brilliantly colored dizzying images without once leading you away from the center of her tale of an enchanting and enchanted child and her special crusade. I don't have enough fingers to count the marvelous characters in this book, but the strange little girl with the tight curly red hair and two tone eyes is the most unlikely and welcome heroine to come down the road in an RV in a very long time.
What a great story! Told in an entertaining and unusual voice, The Last Supper Catering Company is about a girl whose personal characteristics draw stares, and whose family is culturally diverse and not accepted by the local townspeople. Completely sheltered from the outside world to begin with, B. Thankful Childe finds her surprising life's calling at an early age and learns to use it to help others. As the title implies, there is a theme of showing love through cooking or sharing food which was used in a very touching way. I loved the part of the Banner Bars and The Five Senses, and the references to the paint by number last supper. The main character was completely lovable, and I enjoyed most of the other characters too, especially B. Thankful Childe's father. What a wonderful man, who had gone through so much but was full of love for his adopted family. Funny, sad, happy and full of love and tenderness, The Last Supper Catering Company has a lot to offer!
Years ago a good friend "coerced" me into reading The Color Purple. I hadn't wanted to, because I knew it dealt with human cruelty and I wanted no part of it. I'm so glad she made me read it -- one of the best books around...and now...

The Last Supper Catering Company is a quirky, disarmingly innocent story of B. Thankful Childe-Lucknow -- a mixed race, unusual girl raised far from so called "civilization". Born a few minutes after her mother's death, her life is one unusual insight after another with a recurring theme "Be thankful for life" despite the cruelty and bigotry of those who fear anyone who is different. Told she has a special mission in her life but not what it is, B. Thankful takes you on a rambling journey filled with love, food and understanding that had me holding my breath until the very last page.

Her "refusal to see the world in black or white, preferring to embrace all the colors God created" keeps this gawky, yet compassionate young girl's heart open to the song in each heart she meets. Her gift is to create a last meal for those preparing to transition from life in the here to life in the after -- a meal that brings joy, peace and acceptance to those she serves. Not since Chocolat has reverence for food been documented as beautifully as in the Ritual of the Five Senses.

"If you wanted a wish to come true, you had to look God directly in the eye, and you were less likely to make a careless wish..."

If you don't read anything else this summer, get this one and savor it. It's available as an ebook, but you're going to love it enough to buy paperbacks so you can hand it on to your dearest friends. The theme is simple and complex at the same time -- "Remember me, for I will remember you." A masterpiece!
