But not great either. It was short and sweet, but there was little emotion there. Even the sex felt flat. There were a couple of errors too bit nothing too annoying.
Only 3-5 chapters.
Nice, short read.
Very good book. I wish it was just a little bit longer. I really did enjoy this story. The characters were great and funny. Story line was good. Well on to the next story. Happy reading.
Poor her, for her fiance leaving her for her best friend. The best friend she has a catering business with.
To get her mind cleared and have some alone time she goes hiking and before doing that she makes a stop and meets a handsome shop owner.
Who is a werewolf and rescues her from the bad guys on the mountain.
He takes her home to take care of her and they have feelings for each other, hot and steamy feelings.
In my continuing quest to find standalone paranormal romance short stories, I stumbled on Alpha Rescue. It looked liked it would be a complete story with an HEA despite it being BBW Shifter, which seems to be the code words these days for a serial. I am happy to say it is a complete story with an HEA. No cliffhanger.
The story started out decent enough. Mindy is a jilted bride who decides to go on a lone camping trip as a means of self-discovery and to help gain perspective to move forward with her life. On her way to the national park where she plans to go camping, she stops at a nearby town to stock up on supplies. When she walks into the store, she meets Jasper... and now the story becomes completely predictable
- I knew Jasper was the love interest and the shifter
- I knew Jasper was going to follow her
- I knew Jasper was going to save her from something
- I knew they would do the insta-mate, insta-lust thing, but not really insta-love because that really didn’t seem to even be part of the story at all. No proclamations of love or an ILY, or even really any sense of romance. On one hand, if you think about, it is actually refreshing since they’ve known each other for only a few hours before they insta-sex. On the other hand, this is supposed to be a romance. I'm expecting some sense of romance, ya know?
- I knew they would have sex and declare themselves mates forevah!
- Cue HEA (if you can call it that).. the end.
It is not so much the predictability or the insta-whatever because, hello... paranormal romance reader here. It comes with the territory most of the time. It was more the execution of the story. This is another example of a story that could be better if it was longer so a relationship could be written to be more believable and also if it had better editing and proofreading.
The other issues I had include the insta-acceptance from Mindy when she learns Jasper is a shifter. There was really no disbelief at all. She also accepts being his forever mate and is ready to “bear his pups†with about as much thought and consideration as choosing what color socks to wear. And then there are the typos and continuity issues that really started to pile up. One continuity example is when Jasper sets her down on a couch and they start to have sex and then she is described as falling back on the bed. Then a little later he says he wants to take her to his bed. There’s more I could point out that had me shaking my head, but this review is too long already and I don’t have the energy to break it all down.
There also seemed to be British spelling (such as chiselled, travelled, savouring, grey) in this story, which surprised me since the author’s bio states she lives near the Rocky Mountains. So maybe she moved to the U.S. or the bio is just fake. On the other hand, maybe the author is actually American but just can’t spell. I dunno. Whatever it is, if a book is implied to be taking place in the U.S. and the author is implied to be American, then I would expect American spelling *shrugs*... Just saying.
Finally, paragraphs were not indented. Instead block style was used but the line spacing for a paragraph was barely more than the regular line spacing so it was kind hard to distinguish the paragraphs. It did not make for comfortable reading.
If you just want a quick, predictable, and forgettable PNR story with barely a plot to entertain you for a half hour and don’t care about editing or proofreading, then maybe this story is for you.
My search continues for some good standalone paranormal romance short stories.

UPDATE I just noticed that the keyword-stuffed title now has the word "pregnancy" in it. I'm 99% sure that word was not there when I downloaded this book because pregnancy is a not a theme I like and it usually makes me run away from a book. But here's the thing... there is no pregnancy in this story! So that is very misleading to readers who do like pregnancy themed stories. Unless you count Mindy's "ZOMG! We're gonna be mates forevah and I'm gonna have his puppies!" kind of thoughts as potential pregnancy (paraphrasing of course, she doesn't say or think that exactly but there is something similar in her thoughts -- see above).
