The Duke of Fenwick was a reprobrate.

Which is why it has always been up to Teddy Middleton, the second son, to run the estate and both their lives. But the Duke is full of surprises--the latest one a wedding. For Teddy. To the Duke's best friend's sister, Juliette.

Finding herself in church for her own surprise wedding was unnerving, to be sure. But to avoiding scandal seemed to be the most prudent thing to do, so Juliette said, "I do." She'd make the best of it and hope Teddy wouldn't be harder to take care of than her previous household had been. She simply had no idea how she could manage two estates on her own.

After a disastrous wedding night, Teddy and Juliette don't have very high hopes for a life of wedded bliss. As they forge ahead with resolute chagrin, it begins to dawn on them both that they are allies in the same war for sanity among their crazy relations. Mutual admiration turns to friendship which turns to...something neither one ever expected.

But the Duke has one more surprise for them both--one that will change everything.

Second Son of a Duke is a short story of 14,000 words. It is intended for mature readers due to content.

Most romances have a wedding, either at the end (normal) or the beginning. This one is no exception. I am a little curious as to just how the duke and the earl made the young couple get married, as there did not seem to be any hostile overtones. There is an abundance of light humor, nothing to make my eyes tear, but enough to quirk a smile. Parts of the ending were predictable...the guy has to figure out how to get his wife to his bed and to get her to enjoy sex...they have to fall in love and realise it, tell each other. The rest to the ending, while unique, was by then not totally a shock. All's well that ends well and all that.

Second Son of a Duke edition by Gwen Hayes Romance eBooks Reviews

I thought this was a good read; the plot was slightly varied from the usual forced marriage theme. Teddy's brother the Duke is a wastrel who gambles, drinks and spends most of his time with his mistress and friends. His best friend follows the same habits. Teddy and Juliette are tricked into marriage by the two friends - as a joke? Of course the marriage gets off to a terrible start. Juliette doesn't know that Teddy's responsibilities are the same as hers - take care of the estate for their brother, be the responsible one! They both think they now have an additional duty of taking care of a spouse - there just isn't enough time in the day!

I liked the premise, there wasn't a lot of plot development but, I liked how it was handled, within the limits of the storyline and length. I consider it well worth the price and I thought the ending was different enough to keep my attention.
The set up is... rather implausible.

However, despite the implausibility of the 'surprise' marriage, there was still potential to the story. However, it never quite managed to make much of its potential. The hero and heroine were likable, which is always a plus, but the whole thing falls a little flat and feels under developed.
Very short but entertaining. I know I would have enjoyed a longer version were the tension and the relationship would have had room to build up more. As well as the characters. There is a really good story in here that just needed more words to feel more complete.
The story wasn't long enough. There was no real background on the characters. It basically just jumped to the point and moved from there. Basically a man and a woman are manipulated to the alter by their respective brothers even though the author never explains how that came about. They basically go about there business trying to find common ground and respect for one another. Then out of nowhere his brother and her brother decide they are gay and want to fake their deaths and runaway together and bonus the happy couple is happy to help them in their shenanigans.
I found this to be a highly entertaining short story. Bear in mind it is a short story, but it will capture your attention if you love a good romance. The characters were well-developed and endearing and the story drove itself through to the short but satisfying ending we all love. One thing I found that I liked about this story was the fact that the author didn't shy away from a topic most people back then and still today want to ignore. The author embraced truth and in such a way that most people should not be shocked. If you are in the market for a quick tale of love and desire and matchmaking, I highly recommend this tale.
Both hero and heroine are more like busy CEOs, taking care of their respective family estates and feeling trapped and frustrated doing it. But thankfully the heir to the dukedom has paired them together in holy matrimony sure that two such similar creatures would make each other happy. What he didn't count on was the heroines resentment at having more to take care of since surely she will be expected to take over her new household and she's never met a man who didn't need caring for either. She may be married, but she doesn't have to like it.

This is one of the few novels in which the heroine is allowed to hold herself apart from the sex, refusing to go one step beyond what is required until she has had the chance to evaluate, come to terms, accept and admire her counterpart, then love him.
This was a quick, efficient read! I felt sorry for the Duke's brother, Teddy and the delightful woman that he was forced to marry. Juliette basically carried the same burdens as Teddy did, caring for the family and the holdings. They may have been forced into marriage, but they found allies in each other. It was also heartbreaking that the Duke decides to walk away from the title and fake his own death. You'll have to read why he decided to do that. Good story.
